Alessandro Giua is professor of Automatic Control at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Cagliari, Italy.

He received the Laurea degree in electric engineering from the University of Cagliari, Italy in 1988, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer and systems engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, in 1990 and 1992. He joined the University of Cagliari in 1994 as assistant professor, becoming associate professor in 1998 and full professor in 2005.

His research interests include discrete event systems, hybrid systems, networked control systems, automated manufacturing, Petri nets, control of mechanical systems, failure diagnosis. He maintains a web page on hybrid Petri nets. He co-authored, with Angela Di Febbraro, the book Sistemi ad eventi discreti, McGraw-Hill Italia, 2002, and co-authored with Carla Seatzu the book Analisi dei sistemi dinamici, Springer-Verlag Italia, II edition, 2009.

He has been a visiting researcher at: Universidad de Zaragoza (Spain), INRIA Rocquencourt e Lorraine (France), Université d'Angers (France), Université de Metz (France), CINVESTAV  Guadalajara (Mexico), Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (France), Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan (France), Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne (France), Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg (Germany), Ecole Centrale de Lille (France), Université Paul Cézanne - Aix-Marseille III (France), Zhejiang University (China).
